Survey finds 77 percent of Canadians are missing out on family memories by not cooking and eating together

TORONTO, April 23, 2019 /CNW/ – Canadians are spending less time cooking and eating together because of busy schedules and the demand for convenient meal options. More than three-quarters (77 percent) of Canadians are worried they are missing out on valuable family memories by not cooking and eating together, according to a recent omnibus survey commissioned by LG Electronics Canada*.

The survey also found more than half of Canadians (53 per cent) feel that family recipes bring them closer to their heritage. And, more than 40 per cent of Canadians are worried that their family heritage will be lost if their family recipes aren’t passed down.

To better understand Canadian eating habits and inspire Canadians to cook more together to make meaningful memories, LG Electronics Canada has partnered with renowned Canadian chef and successful cookbook author, Anna Olson, as part of its new LG Kitchen Memory Rescue campaign.

“Eating with others provides valuable bonding time, strengthens family traditions and triggers some of our fondest memories,” says Dave Oyagi, Brand Manager, Home Appliances, LG Electronics Canada, Inc.  Our survey found that 71 per cent of Canadians agree that some of their most memorable family moments involve home-cooked meals and eating together,” says Oyagi. “At LG Electronics Canada, we want to inspire Canadians to hold on to their cherished recipes and memories. Our appliances make it more convenient and enjoyable to cook at home than ever before.”

To champion the importance of Canadians cooking at home together, Anna Olson will help families create and relive meaningful memories together through food for the campaign.

“Some of our most cherished memories involve food. Recreating a taste or smell can take us back in time, filling us with nostalgic memories and enabling us to create new ones,” says Chef Anna Olson.  “According to the omnibus survey, nearly three quarters of Canadians (72 per cent) agree that aromas from family recipes bring back memorable family moments.  I have experienced this personally, which is why I’m excited to collaborate with LG Electronics Canada for the Kitchen Memory Rescue campaign to inspire more Canadians to cook together.”

In her role as ambassador of the LG Kitchen Memory Rescue campaign, Olson will share her culinary insights and pro-cooking tips to help rescue cherished family recipes and encourage Canadians to cook at home using local, seasonal ingredients to create lasting, new memories through food. Olson’s recipes are featured in two campaign videos which showcase the latest innovation in LG kitchen appliances including the LG InstaView Door-in-Door® refrigerator, LG QuadWash® dishwasher, and LG ProBake Convection® range.

Other key stats from the LG Electronics Canada Kitchen Memory Rescue omnibus survey include:

  • More than three quarters (76 per cent) of Canadians believe that we’re spending less time cooking and eating together as a family because we’re too busy
  • 64 per cent of Canadians wish that they could enjoy more home-cooked meals with their families
  • More than half of Canadians feel that knowing what they have in their fridge would inspire them to create meals at home
  • Nearly 50 per cent of Canadians feel that having an app that could suggest recipes based on what they have in their fridge would make it easier for them to cook at home
  • More than 40 per cent of Canadians would be inspired to cook at home if their appliances made it easier and/or faster to cook

*A total of 1,000 adult residents were surveyed online, between March 29 and April 3, 2019. The sample was randomly drawn from Legerweb’s panel of potential survey respondents. Post-stratification weights were applied to the sample based on 2016 census population parameters to ensure representation by province of Canada, age and gender.

An associated margin of error for a probability-based sample of this size would be ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
